This upper world journey is the third journey we recommend as part of our series on shamanic journeys. If you haven’t read the first post in the series, we recommend your start here.
The Upper World Journey
First listen to the sound of the drum and let your body relax. Set your intention and say out loud, or in your head, that you are journeying to meet your teacher. Use your imagination and begin at your anchor. Once you are comfortable being at your anchor spot begin to look around for a way to the Upper World. Ways to the Upper World can include climbing the world tree or a mountain, climbing a rainbow or a rope. For most of the years that I have been journeying I have jumped into a fire that is constantly burning in my anchor spot and traveled to the upper world on smoke.
It is important, especially when you are beginning to journey to the upper world that you are conscious of travelling through three layers. The first layer could be light smoke. The second layer could be thick clouds. But, on the third layer it is important to feel as though you are breaking through something. It is a classic shamanic journey experience to break through a barrier to get to the upper worlds. When explaining this concept to my students over the years I compared the layer that I broke through to the consistency of chocolate pudding that has been left in the fridge without a lid. When left in the fridge like this, pudding usually develops a crusty layer. That is what I felt like I was breaking through for many years of my journey experiences.
Meet Your Teacher
You do not have to stay close to the entrance location of the upper world. You can wander about to meet your teacher. Teachers, like power animals can really vary. Often teachers appear in forms or as people that we would recognize and consider teachers. If you come from a Christian background your teacher could be Jesus. If you come from a Buddhist background your teacher could be Buddha. You may be greeted by your teacher the first time you enter the Upper World, and it may take several journeys to meet your teacher.
The upper world can look like anything. You may experience walking on clouds, or it could be earth like terrain. There are no hard and fast rules regarding the appearance of the upper world. It does differ however if your spiritual training has been anchored in one specific tradition. Some traditions have very set expectations of what the spirit world looks like and who you encounter in each place. Different traditions, as indicated above, have different teachers based on their mythology. If that is your situation you are likely to experience what you have been trained to look for. For most of us however, we do not come from a specific tradition or a specific set of expectations for our teachers.
If you haven’t done so already, we first recommend you find your anchor spot by doing your first shamanic journey to the middle world here.
We recommend using the below 25 minute drumming track for your first three shamanic journeys. This track and others are available here for download.
