Flicker

Latin: Colaptes Chrysoides
Red Bellied Woodpecker (Flicker)
Red Bellied Woodpecker (Flicker)

The Spirit Bird associated with the Strong Suns Moon (June 21 to July 22) is the Flicker. Flickers are woodpeckers. They are considered the drummers of natural world. They play their song on dead limbs, tin roofs, and wooden houses, sometimes to extract insects and sometimes for the sheer joy of playing. During mating, flickers present an especially magnificent display of their musical talents.

Bear

Latin: Ursus Arctos
Traits: Stability, durability, healing, introspection, maturity and leadership.

Bear are the great dreamers. Bears demonstrate very gentle and truly loving. However they can be deadly if approached wrong, or at the wrong time of the year.

There are different traditions in North America which teach that the peoples descended from the bear, and hence Bear has a very honoured position spiritually speaking.

Bear has been one of my most constant, gentlest and harshest teachers and is a great friend to have on any shamanic journey.

Bear has an intense sense of smell. Our Ancestors watched which plants the Bear ate. We learnt different remedies by eating the same vegetation bears ate.

West

I had to walk a long time on the Medicine Wheel before I was ready to merge with West. Water is the Element of West. The Spirit Keeper of West is Mudjekeewis, who manifests so beautifully as the Great Bear.

On the wheel the time of the Mudjekeewis is the Evening till Midnight, Autumn, our adult years to elder time. This is the time of slowing down & taking stock of experiences, of going within, like the Grizzly in autumn, of going within spiritually, gaining strength from the knowledge  earned; prepare for the time of “winter” or later times.

As with South, West widened my spiritual vision. I have had a most amazing relationship with Water & Orcas. They are one of the eldest [Read more…]

Coyote

Coyote leaping

Latin: Canus Latrins
Traits: A trickster and a powerful teacher. Coy, keenly observant, playful. Deceitful.

In stories, Coyote and Mouse are often found together. The spirit of Mouse has six inches of vision. It’s world is one where everything around it is much bigger. Seeing only the world directing in front of it, with the rest obscured by the largeness around it. [Read more…]

South

South is a wonderful place to explore. It is warm and fiery, and not without its own lessons. The spirit keeper of south is Shawnodese and the spirit manifested as South is Coyote. However, spirit has shown me that Mouse shares this walk with Coyote.

South is the element of fire. I live in central Alberta, and the consensus is… any part of the country to the south, is usually hotter. This is of course, a northern hemisphere perspective. A Medicine Wheel in Australia for example may have Earth in the South, and Fire in the North. [Read more…]
