Middle World Journey to find your Anchor Spot
This middle world journey is part of our “how to” series on shamanic journeys. If you haven’t read the first post in the series, we recommend your start here.
I recommend to my students that the first place they need to get comfortable in is their starting place. This is your anchor spot, a safe spot. It is important that you are familiar with this location because I will refer to it as you discover the process of journeying.
When you delve into the deeper and more complex journey requests and suggestions it will become an important part of your journey landscape. The anchor place is where you start all of your journeys initially. Even after twenty years I still start in the same place. It has changed over the years as I have changed, but it still is the same energetic spot that I first encountered in my initial journey oh so many years ago. When the drum starts to beat you will picture the place in nature that you feel safe in. This could be a park that you have visited, it could be your own back yard. The most important thing is to engage your imagination. When the drum starts engage your imagination to see the place in nature you want to start to journey from.
For this first journey don’t concern yourself so much with travelling, rather look at the area around you. Do you have trees? Is it a meadow? What are the characteristics that are unique to your place? Take a look at it from each direction, walk a ways in each direction. Knowing this landscape is important for many reasons, the most important reason right now is just to familiarize yourself with what is potentially an unknown spiritual landscape. Spend the entire journey there getting to know your doorway into the other worlds

When i first walked in, it was completely dark except for a roaring campfire. Ten paces to the left was the most beautiful forest meadow id ever seen. It was sunshiny, birds were flying around and singing. There was a creek. That was my anchor point. Ten paces to the right of the campfire was the entrance to the lowerworld. It was all dark . There were scarytype faces that tried to scare me but they faded away. I could tell the entrance was a dark tunnel that led down but I didnt go there. When I came back I felt so light I thought I was going to bounce off the ceiling. That was nice!
